This photo was taken by Benjamin H. Courtney, a logger from Oregon who served in the 20th Engineer (Forestry) Battalion.  Courtney’s unit helped clear timber in the Vosges Mountains of eastern France in early 1918 to prepare for the American buildup in the area.   On August 23, 1918, the 129th Field Artillery moved into position near Gerardmer.  Captain Harry S Truman of Battery D may well have visited this canteen during the 129th’s brief stay before the Saint Mihiel offensive in September.
